'Ben Chilwell rejects Crystal Palace' – Fans rage at 'ridiculous' Chelsea update

Crystal Palace supporters have voiced their opposition to the club's reported pursuit of Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell.

Football Insider reported on 28 January that Palace were plotting a loan deal to solve their left-back issues with Chilwell being their target.

Now, with the transfer deadline looming on 3 February, the club has reportedly approached Chelsea over a potential move for the 28-year-old [Daily Mail].

With Tyrick Mitchell the only natural left-back available in the squad, Palace are keen to reinforce the position. However, many fans criticise the rumours, citing concerns over Chilwell's injury record and overall quality.

Chilwell has endured a difficult season at Chelsea, falling down the pecking order with Marc Cucurella preferred at left-back.

Renato Veiga had been used as Cucurella's deputy, featuring mostly in Conference League and cup matches, but he has since left the club on loan. Meanwhile, Chilwell has made just one appearance for the Blues this season, with fans frustrated over the way the club has handled his situation.

His injury record is a major concern for Palace supporters, as he missed 33 games last season, 20 in 2022/23, and 45 the season before that [Transfermarkt].

Football Insider reported back in November that Palace were actively searching for a new left-back, compiling a list of targets ahead of the January transfer window. Now, Fabrizio Romano has claimed that a move for Chilwell is "close” but the final decision rests with the player.

Amusingly—but seriously—Palace fans have taken to social media to urge Chilwell to reject the move. One fan wrote, "I hope he rejects us" while another vented their frustration at the club's recruitment, saying, "No wonder we have a paper-thin squad”.
