Blackburn Rovers striker Andi Weimann was “hiding his embarrassment” when appealing for a penalty after an incredible miss during his side’s FA Cup win over Middlesbrough, Keith Hackett has said.
The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that the Austrian international never had any chance of being given a spot-kick for the incident.
Weimann netted the only goal of the game at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday (11 January) to secure his side’s place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Just moments before that though, the Blackburn man endured a moment to forget with an unbelievable miss that left him unsuccessfully appealing for a penalty.
Blackburn penalty claim emphatically dismissed despite win at Middlesbrough
With around three quarters of the game at the Riverside Stadium having been played, Weimann somehow spurned a guilt-edged chance to put his side into the lead.
The Blackburn man charged down a clearance from Middlesbrough goalkeeper Tom Glover before getting past the Australian to go through on goal.
But with Glover scrambling to recover, the forward almost inexplicably scooped the ball over the bar, befoe going to ground when his legs were caught by the reaching arms of the ‘keeper.
That then left the former Bristol City man appealing for a penalty which was not given, and Hackett believes there was never any chance of it being given.
When asked if Blackburn had a case for a penalty in this incident, the former referee said:
“He’s not going to get a penalty kick. I think he’s deflecting his own embarrassment. Not a penalty kick.”
Manager John Eustace has attracted attention for his work at Ewood Park this season, with his side seventh in the Championship table, and now through to the next round of the competition.
Having scored the winner just moments after this, Weimann has now found the net six times in all competitions for Blackburn this season.
They are now set to host Premier League side Wolves in the next round of the competition.
In other news, Leyton Orient are preparing an offer to sign a Blackburn Rovers player.
