When an Italian footballer leaves Italy there’s always an assumption that he’ll want to return pretty soon. Well, almost immediately.

There often appears to be confusion over why any footballer would be happy leaving the country, and a feeling they only do it for money. Therefore, as soon as an Italian star arrives on foreign soil, the rumours will be warmed up about a return.

As Newcastle United fans will be well aware, that’s been the case for well over a year with their midfielder Sandro Tonali.

How could Tonali be happy with the Magpies… Newcastle isn’t in Italy?!

Calciomercato have come up with the latest plan to rescue the midfielder from his dull Premier League experience and a life of overcooked pasta.

According to a report on Tuesday, ‘a scenario opens up that in the football market environment people are starting to talk about’.

That scenario is Juventus selling Douglas Luiz to Newcastle United and Sandro Tonali going the other way. It’s called a ‘bomb idea’ but reality may well defuse it.

According to the report, Eddie Howe sees Tonali as ‘important, but not essential’, and that could facilitate a transfer.
