Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is a Mexican professional boxer who is a four-division world champion. He has held the WBA (Super), The Ring and lineal middleweight titles, and the WBA (Regular) super middleweight title since 2018.
He previously held the WBA (Unified), WBC and Ring light middleweight titles between 2011 and 2013; the WBC (twice), Ring and lineal middleweight titles between 2015 and 2019; the WBO light-middleweight title from 2016 to 2017; and the IBF middleweight and WBO light heavyweight titles in 2019.
As of July 2020, Álvarez is ranked as the world’s best active boxer, pound for pound by BoxRec, The Ring magazine, the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board (TBRB) and Boxing Writers Association of America. He is also ranked as the world’s best active middleweight by BoxRec, The Ring and TBRB.

Currently boxing’s biggest pay-per-view star, Alvarez signed a 5-year $365million fight contract with DAZN, under which his next eleven fights would be broadcast in the U.S. by the subscription sports streaming service. He pocketed roughly around $50million combined for his first two fights on DAZN.
He has made in excess of $200million in career earnings till date. He is believed to have made $70million from his two fights with Gennady Golovkin. His last fight against Sergey Kovalev in 2019 seeing him make $35million.

He started boxing when he was around 13 years old. He became the 2005 Junior Mexican National Boxing Champion at the age of 15. His amateur record was 44-2 with 12 knockouts.
Alvarez turned professional at 15, shortly after his championship at the Junior Nationals. In his first 19 months as a professional boxer, he knocked out eleven of his 13 documented opponents, all of whom were significantly older. His first title came in 2007 when he defeated Ricardo Cano to win the Jalisco welterweight title.
A year later he beat Gabriel Martinez to bag the WBA Fedecentro welterweight title. His win against Antonio Fitch 2009 earned him the WBC-NABF and WBO Latino welterweight titles. He soon added the WBC light middleweight title before winning the WBA (Unified), and vacant The Ring light middleweight titles, when he beat Austin Trout in 2013.
However, he would those titles in 2013, in his first and only defeat till date, against Floyd Mayweather Jr. He then had some stellar fights against the likes of Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan, Rocky Fielding and Daniel Jacobs.
However, his battles with Gennady Golovkin in 2017 and 2018 stand out as his best bouts. With the first fight in 2017 ending in a draw, Alvarez defeated GGG in a rematch next year for the WBA (Super), WBC and vacant The Ring middleweight titles.
His last fight came against Sergey Kovalev in 2019, whom he defeated to win the WBO light heavyweight title. He then defeated Callum Smith in his last fight in 2020.
Canelo Alvarez Family and Relationships
Canelo Alvarez, full name Santos Saul Alvarez Barragan, was born in the outskirts of Guadalajara, Jalisco. When he was aged five his family moved to their current home of Juanacatlan, Jalisco. He is the youngest of eight children, seven of them being boys.
All of his brothers are professional boxers. Among his brothers are welterweight boxers Ramon Alvarez, Ricardo Alvarez and former WBA interim world champion, Rigoberto Alvarez.
Alvarez was previously engaged to Marisol Gonzalez, who is Miss Mexico Universe 2003 and a sports reporter for Televisa Deportes.
The pair called off the engagement in 2010, after which he had a relationship with Kate del Castillo. In 2013, he had been linked with 2005 La Academia contestant Cynthia Rodriguez.
Alvarez is currently dating Fernanda Gomez. He has two daughters and one son, all from different relationships.
