Bruno Fernandes was superb for Manchester United against Liverpool on Sunday.

Having missed the harrowing 2-0 defeat against Newcastle at Old Trafford through suspension, the Portugal international stepped up for Ruben Amorim to help the Red Devils secure a 2-2 draw at Anfield.

The man born in Maia provided the assist for Lisandro Martinez to thump the Red Devils into a 1-0 lead, while he also played Joshua Zirkzee through on goal for what could have been a 96th minute winner.

After the thrilling Premier League clash had ended, it became apparent Bruno Fernandes had achieved something no other Manchester United player has done since records began.

Bruno Fernandes makes history for Manchester United

Since Opta started collecting Premier League data in the 2003/04 campaign, no Manchester United player had ever created four chances in a game at Anfield, until now.

Fernandes continuously made the Liverpool backline work as he probed Arne Slot’s defence with teasing deliveries, registering four key passes – but that was far from all he did on Merseyside.

SofaScore shows that the Manchester United No.8 also put in a real shift defensively, recording three tackles, one interception and two clearances, while also winning three freekicks for his side.

Furthermore, the 30-year-old won both of the aerial duels he was involved in, delivered three accurate crosses and completed all three of his attempted dribbles.

Ian Wright backed Fernandes to shine under Amorim – and on the basis of this performance, the popular pundit may well be spot on.

Ruben Amorim needs consistency from Bruno Fernandes

As Amorim stated after Sunday’s 2-2 draw, Manchester United will go backwards if they start to relax after this positive result, and the same can be said of Fernandes.

The Portuguese playmaker let his side down in the 2-0 defeat at Wolves on Boxing Day, foolishly picking up a second yellow card before the Old Gold then netted their two goals.

As captain, Fernandes – who Barcelona like – has to remove these silly moments from his game, and deliver more performances like the one which saw him make history at Anfield.
