Man United secured their place in the Europa League semi finals in remarkable style with an incredible late win over Lyon at Old Trafford.

After a 2-2 draw in the first leg, Ruben Amorim‘s side made the perfect start to the return leg at Old Trafford on Thursday (17 April).

Goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot ensured Man United held a 2-2 lead going into half time, before a Corentin Tolisso header pulled a goal back for Lyon with 20 minutes of normal time remaining.

Just moments later the visitors would score a previously unlikely equaliser to level the tie through Nicolas Tagliafico before Tolisso was sent off for a second yellow card, with the game heading to extra time.

At that point Man United then inexplicably collapsed, as Lyon took a two-goal lead thanks to Rayan Cherki and a penalty from Alexandre Lacazette, but there was another incredible turnaround to come.

Bruno Fernandes pulled a goal back for the hosts with a penalty of his own, before a stunning strike from Kobbie Mainoo in the final minute of extra time levelled the game.

It would then get even better for Man United, with Harry Maguire popping up in stoppage time in extra time to head home a winner.

Here’s how Football Insider rated the performances of the Man United squad during that clash with Lyon.

Andre Onana – 8

Onana was dropped for the Newcastle game after his errors in the first leg, but responded really well here with some excellent saves to keep his ahead in this match. Nothing he could do about the goals.

Noussair Mazraoui (off for Shaw, ’46) – 5

Taken off at the break, presumably due to injury, after a relatively quiet first half at centre-back.

Harry Maguire – 7

Made some good contributions early on but bafflingly ducked for the cross that led to the Lyon equaliser, and was caught out for the third, but came up good in attack with the header that won it in stoppage time of extra time to make himself the hero.

Makeshift striker Maguire headed a winner to complete wild scenes.

Harry Maguire to the rescue

Leny Yoro – 7

Very entertaining. Made some eye-catching attacking runs in the first half and a number of important defensive interventions too, including one incredible block with his head.

Diogo Dalot – 5

Took his goal well with a good finish, but otherwise struggled to contribute at either end of the pitch.

Manuel Ugarte – (off for Mount, ’86) – 7

Ugarte produced a poor performance for Man United at Newcastle, but kept his place in the side here, justified that with the goal and some decent midfield work.

Casemiro – 6

Not a game where the ageing Brazilian had really managed to get involved at all, but made some big contributions by setting up both Mainoo and Maguire in extra time.

Patrick Dorgu – (off for Amass, ‘100) – 6

A night where he looked to get forward without too many clincial moments, did ok defensively.

Alejandro Garnacho – (off for Eriksen, ‘100) – 5

A strange evening. Garnacho is among those being touted for an exit from Man United, and while his pace and runs in behind caused the Lyon defence plenty of problems, he struggled badly for an end product given the openings he found himself in.

Man United attackers endure varied evenings

Rasmus Hojlund (off for Mainoo, ’87) – 3

Hojlund is attracting interest amid his Man United struggles, but started with Joshua Zirkzee out injured, only to produce another performance where he worked hard but failed to make any impact. Telling he went off with his side needing a winner despite no centre-forward being named on the bench.

Bruno Fernandes – 9 – Player of the Match

Hard to know how he didn’t score with several magnificent attempts that went close in normal time, and then stepped up to score from the spot to give hope in extra time. Continues to look like the one consistently reliable source of an attacking spark for this otherwise lacklustre side.

Substitutes

Luke Shaw (on for Mazraoui, ’46) – 3

Brought on at seemingly short notice and which proved costly. Didn’t cover himself in glory for the third Lyon goal and then conceded the penalty from which the French side made it four.

Mason Mount (on for Ugarte, ’86) – 5

Struggled to offer an attacking threat after coming on late.

Kobbie Mainoo (on for Hojlund, ’87) – 7

Had been quiet in attack until stepping up with an incredible finish that levelled the game deep in extra time.

Christian Eriksen (on for Garnacho, ‘100) – 6

Came off the bench in extra time but didn’t prove to be one of the key players.

Harry Amass (on for Dorgu) – 5

A remarkable experience for the academy graduate to be a part of.
