The Brazilian was missing from the line-up due to suspension but made his support known after the historic victory to his team.

The Magpies took the lead in the first half thanks to Alexander Isak, a player the Gunners themselves want to sign this summer.

Anthony Gordon then put Eddie Howe's team in dreamland, doubling their advantage and putting Newcastle in firm control of this tie.

Guimaraes posted on his Instagram story after the win saying: "Well done boys!!! Let's go for more"

Taking a 2-0 advantage in the first leg away from home in the League Cup is an ideal result for the Tyneside club. It sets them up perfectly for a strong showing in the return leg.

A cup win would be a historic achievement for Howe, marking his first major piece of silverware and Newcastle's first major trophy since 1955.

Guimaraes has been instrumental this season, starting 21 of his 24 appearances across all competitions.

The Brazilian international has contributed one goal and six assists, showcasing his importance to the team.

However, having a player of Guimaraes’ calibre inevitably attracts attention from Europe's elite clubs. Manchester City have been heavily linked with him, with Pep Guardiola identifying the midfielder as a long-term target.

While a move mid-season seems unlikely, there could be a serious move in the summer, which may test Newcastle's resolve.

For now, though, Howe’s side are enjoying their best form in years, riding the momentum of seven consecutive wins.

They next face Bromley on 12 January as they aim to progress in another domestic cup competition.
