Newcastle United will have to pay a large fee to sign Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo as they line up talks over a big-money move.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson insisted it would take a big fee to land the 25-year-old, while this year is seen as the final opportunity to make “top dollar” from his sale.

The West London outfit hold the cards as things stand, with his contract set to run until 2026 when the club will have the option to extend by a further year should they choose.

However, come the summer, talk is expected to turn towards his contract ticking down and Brentford could feel pressure to cash in on a significant offer.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in December that Mbeumo is one of Newcastle’s top targets as they look to strengthen their right-wing position.

Brentford are reluctant to let their star player leave the club mid-way through the season in which he has contributed to 40% of their goals with 13 wins and four assists.

However, they are expected to be open to significant offers for all of their players as a result of their project which would see the money reinvested into new signings.

Newcastle are believed to have been boosted by that stance, but may struggle to meet the Bees’ financial demands this month given their ongoing situation with PSR.

Robinson has insisted that a deal could be on the cards come the end of the season, but Brentford will not be pressured to sell for anything below their lofty asking price.

Brentford are in the driving seat because he’s contracted until 2026,” he told Football Insider.

“There’s also an option in his contract to extend, and it’s the club’s option, so if they extend that option, his contract will run until 2027.

“The player is not the one holding the cards here.

“With Mbeumo, it’s going to take a big fee.

“Listen, we know Brentford will sell if they get the right fee, but they’re not going to be held to ransom.

“He’s 25 now, so this is the optimal time to sell him. If Brentford are to cash in, it will be this season.

“This is probably the last season where they will get top dollar for him, because at the end of the season and we go into next year, we start talking about his contract ticking down.”
