Chelsea exit: 'Dewsbury-Hall injury will threaten January transfer window move'
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall will have been worried about a potential injury scare harming his chances of a January loan move away from Chelsea, Lucy Ward said.
The midfielder joined the Blues back in the summer, following manager Enzo Maresca to the club from Leicester City.
But having been a regular under the Italian with the Foxes last season, the 26-year-old has struggled for opportunities at Stamford Bridge. He has made just five appearances in the Premier League for Chelsea this season all of which have been as a substitute.
As a result, there has already been speculation Dewsbury-Hall could be on the move in January, and Football Insider understands Leicester could look to re-sign him on loan next month.
Even so, the midfielder was given another chance to impress in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday (19 December) starting in the final game of the league phase against Shamrock Rovers.
But after he went down under a challenge which left him needing treatment on the pitch in the 16th-minute, Ward suggested that would leave him fearing for a potential January loan move.
Speaking after his injury on co-commentary for TNT Sports (8:17pm), the former Leeds United Women’s striker said: “There’s a chance that he’s also looking at January as a way of perhaps getting some minutes somewhere, so if this is an injury it’s certainly something he doesn’t want, both for his Chelsea career and if he’s going to go on loan anywhere.”
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has a big decision to make at Chelsea
Football Insider Opinion
In the end it appears that injury scare ought not to pose a threat to any possible move away from Stamford Bridge in January for Dewsbury-Hall.
The midfielder was able to continue playing and get on the scoresheet in what was a dominant performance from Chelsea, despite the best efforts of some Shamrock fans.
As a result, this particular incident should not stop him from heading out on loan in January, if he remains down the pecking order for the league XI.
However, he may have to decide whether or not that is something he wants to do given the current form Maresca’s side are in.
Chelsea currently look to be big favourites to win the Conference League, and are also involved in the Premier League title race, in the eyes of many outside the club at least.
As a result, Dewsbury-Hall may have to decide whether he wants to go and play regularly elsewhere, or remain at Stamford Bridge in a bit-part role but with the chance of getting his hands on more silverware.
In other news, Nicolas Jackson has given his one-word verdict on Thiago Silva.
