'Chelsea's ownership to separate with relationship at breaking point'

Chelsea’s co-owners look to be heading for a separation at the end of the season after failing to align on the future goals of the club.
The Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital consortium completed a £4.25bn takeover of Chelsea in 2022, ending Roman Abramovich’s 19-year ownership, however since then the club have endured difficult spells on and off the pitch.
From the club’s unorthodox transfer strategy to the controversial sacking of former boss Mauricio Pochettino, it’s fair to say Chelsea fans have not always had full confidence in the ownership to take the club back to the top.
Reports suggest that the relationship is nearly at breaking point, as both parties have looked at buying the other out, and former Everton and Aston Villa CEO Keith Wyness has told Football Insider that a split could be on the horizon for the Chelsea owners.
The news comes after the bosses were unable to agree on whether to leave Stamford Bridge to expand the current stadium, with Earl’s Court being targeted as a possible new location.
All options being explored by Chelsea
In an interview with Sky Sports, Boehly suggested that plans over Chelsea’s stadium redevelopment could determine whether he walks away from the club.
“We have to think long term about what we’re trying to accomplish,” Boehly said.
“We have a big stadium development opportunity that we have to flesh out. That’s going to be where we’re either aligned or we ultimately decide to go different ways.”
Who owns Chelsea? | Percentage of the club |
Clearlake Capital | 61.6% |
Todd Boehly | 12.8% |
Mark Walter | 12.8% |
Hansjorg Wyss | 12.8% |
Chelsea targeting Champions League finish
Another important factor as to whether Chelsea’s owners will look to part ways at the end of the season is if they club are unable to make Champions League football.
After nearly three-years at the club and over one billion spent on talent all over the pitch, the time is now for Chelsea to turn that investment into results.
The Blues currently sit fourth in the Premier League with nine games to go, they will be hoping to achieve Champions League football for the first time under this ownership group.
Chelsea will also be expected to win silverware this season, with the club firm favourites to lift the Europa Conference League at the end of the season.
However, it is still unclear whether this would be enough to make Boehly stay at the club, as being unable to agree on the expansion of Stamford Bridge’s roughly 40,000 capacity could see the co-owners relationship reach breaking point.
If a split between was to happen, it would likely see a struggle for power to determine which part of the ownership gives up their stake in the club.
With Clearlake currently owning 61.6%, it would seem more feasible for Boehly to be the one to step aside, however the process could be dragged out and have detrimental effects for the players performances on the pitch.
As we saw when Abramovich’s era came to an abrupt end, a change in ownership not only brings uncertainty, but a new philosophy to implement across the club, albeit in this case whichever side remains would have already been in place.
This process takes time and with so much change happening in terms of management and personnel on the pitch, the last thing Chelsea need is for outside noise to start to impact results.
It remains to be seen if the situation can be resolved, but if Chelsea are to be competing for the top silverware in the coming years, this is a decision which cannot be taken lightly.
