Jadon Sancho is in line to make an unexpected return to Man United as Chelsea are likely to pay the penalty fee required.

Sancho joined Chelsea in the summer on an initial loan deal, with a mandatory purchase option of £25million this coming transfer window provided they finished higher than 14th in the Premier League – they are currently fourth.

Despite a bright start, Sancho’s performances have fallen off a cliff recently, with fans wanting to see his loan deal terminated.

Sancho has made a number of jabs at Man United since leaving the club, suggesting he thought he was long gone from Old Trafford, but it seems he may be sent packing to Manchester after a new update emerged.

Chelsea ready to pay penalty fee to cancel Jadon Sancho move

As reported by The i, the Blues are now considering the unusual move of paying money to not sign a player.

Chelsea are already weighing up paying a penalty fee to terminate the pre-existing agreement to sign the England international this summer.

However, whilst strange, it is not unheard of for the Blues to take a big short-term hit financially in the hopes of a long-term benefit.

Joao Felix joined Chelsea on a six-month loan in January 2023 for an eye-watering £9.69million [Sky Sports], which while it would be hard to argue was a successful decision shows Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital aren’t afraid of throwing cash around in unconventional ways.

Having already agreed to sign Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP in Portugal, the Blues have little need for Sancho, with Noni Madueke, Pedro Neto, already at Stamford Bridge, plus the suspended Mykhailo Mudryk.

With his middling performances, and extraordinarily high wages, cutting their losses on the former Borussia Dortmund man actually does seem like a smart piece of business, if the penalty fee is a reasonable amount, and saves them trying to offload the 24-year-old as soon as they sign him.

Chelsea have previous history of taking short-term financial hits

When something isn’t working as intended at Chelsea, the club do not hesitate to move quickly to rid themselves of that problem

Kalidou Koulibably was signed for £33million [Sky Sports] in the summer of 2022, but after some poor performances, the Senegalese defender was sold just one year later, for just £20million [BBC Sport].

The same situation is currently happening with Raheem Sterling, signed from Man City for £50million [BBC Sport], before being shifted out on-loan just two seasons later to Arsenal, and likely to leave permanently this summer.

With a stock of young talent ready to step-up in Sancho’s place, such as Quenda, Tyrique George, Kendry Paez and Estevao Willian, making space for those talented players could be a very shrewd move, so it is surely now odds-on for Sancho to arrive back at United.
