Nottingham Forest are facing a nervy wait to find out the full extent of Chris Wood’s injury sustained playing for New Zealand against New Caledonia, but an update has emerged.

The 33-year-old had continued his fine club form into the international break when he scored a hat-trick of headers during New Zealand’s 7-0 win against Fiji.

However, Forest ace Wood was substituted in the 54th minute against New Caledonia on Monday (24 March) before hobbling off.

Despite the injury to their star man, the Kiwis were able to secure all three points in a 3-0 win and, in doing so, confirmed their place at the 2026 World Cup.

However, with Forest set to take on Brighton in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in just five days’ time, Nuno Espírito Santo will be hoping for a positive update when Wood returns to the City Ground later this week.

The early indications are positive for Chris Wood

Early indications from Mail Sport Journalist Tom Collomosse suggested that Wood’s injury is “not thought to be a major one”, but the severity will need to be confirmed by the club.

Collomosse added that the former Newcastle United striker will have further assessment when he returns to Nottingham.

Wood has scored 18 goals in 29 Premier League appearances this season, propelling Forest to third in the table and on course for a spot in the Champions League.

The striker is currently averaging a goal every 131 minutes in the league, meaning his absence would be keenly felt if he were ruled out for an extended period.

At the start of the season, only the most optimistic of supporters would have predicted Forest to be sat third in the Premier League, four points behind Arsenal in second and five clear of Chelsea in fourth.

However, for Nuno’s men, the possibility of playing Champions League football next season is becoming a real possibility.

If they are to achieve something special this season, April marks a pivotal month for The Tricky Trees, as they begin a tough run of fixtures at home to Manchester United.

Nuno will be keen to get key players Murillo and Morgan Gibbs-White back at the club following international duty ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton.

Similarly to Wood, he will be hoping the duo can return unscathed as the club make their final push for a top-four finish for the first time since 1981.
