Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has received the backing of Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood after achieving a personal landmark.

It has been an eventful period for the 36-year-old who was of course part of the squad that lifted the League Cup trophy last weekend.

That has now left Newcastle targeting a string of further honours under manager Eddie Howe, as they aim to become a major force in European football.

Shortly prior to that success at Wembley, Dubravka had also put pen to paper on a new contract with Newcastle that keeps him at the club until the end of next season.

Now, the goalkeeper has also enjoyed a significant moment in his career at international level as well.

Martin Dubravka celebrates Slovakia landmark

On Thursday (20 March), Dubravka played the full 90 minutes for Slovakia in the first leg of their Nations League play-off clash with Slovenia.

The game ended in a goalless draw, meaning the tie will be settled in the second leg on Sunday evening (23 March).

For the Newcastle goalkeeper, this match was a significant moment not just for the clean sheet, but also as it represented the 50th time he has represented Slovakia at senior international level.

Taking to Instagram after the match, Dubravka was keen to reflect on reaching that milestone while expressing his pride in representing his country.

Among those to react was Wood, with the Nottingham Forest star – who was previously teammates with the goalkeeper at Newcastle – one of many people to like that post from the 36-year-old.

Newcastle United goalkeeper facing an interesting future

Football Insider Verdict

While he remains first choice for his country, it will be intriguing to see what the future holds for Dubravka at James’ Park come the summer.

Given his contract will be entering its final season, that transfer window could be the last chance the Magpies have to cash in on him.

With Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford being heavily linked with a move to Newcastle, they may feel they can let go of another shotstopper in the form of Dubravka.

As a result, the 36-year-old could still find himself on the hunt for a new club in the next few months despite only recently signing a new contract.
