Coach says Brentford player was 'completely doomed' – Father even called up asking for help

Denmark coach Brian Riemer has spoken to the Danish media after recently calling up Brentford defender Mads Roerslev.

The 25-year-old has been selected for the senior side for the first time, but things could have gone differently with his career if Brentford hadn't taken a chance on him when he was struggling at FC Copenhagen.

Tipsbladet have covered comments Riemer made in his press conference ahead of their next game against Spain, and the manager revealed Roerslev's father even contacted him due to his son's issues at Copenhagen.

Despite being highly regarded when coming through with the Danish side, the fullback had lost his way at the club and Riemer has confirmed this was when Brentford stepped in.

"Mads Roerslev’s father called and said: ‘You simply have to help’. Mads was in a really good place at FCK, and he was considered one of the heirs. He was allowed to choose his number by Ståle Solbakken, and I have not seen many players get to do that. Suddenly it was a bit in ruins with a couple of unfortunate loan stays. We took him into Brentford in the B team to start something," said Danish coach.

Roerslev signed for the Bees in 2019 and has since gone on to make 130 appearances for the Premier League side. Finally, this has led to recognition with his country and he received his first call up last week from the ex-Branford assistant coach.

The player is now in line to make his debut against Spain or Serbia.
