Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo admitted he was ‘grateful’ to have the opportunity to play in their 3-2 Champions League defeat to PSV.

The 25-year-old opened the scoring from the penalty spot against his boyhood club as Liverpool let their 100 per cent Champions League record slip away.

winger Johan Bakayoko equalised for the Dutch side seven minutes later before Harvey Elliott restored Liverpool's lead just with his second goal in as many Champions League games.

Football Insider revealed (January 27) that Arne Slot’s side are set to open talks with Elliott regarding a new long-term deal at Anfield.

Liverpool were pinned back once again thanks to a 45th-minute goal from Ismael Saibari, sending the two sides level at the break before in-form striker Ricardo Pepi scored the winner and ended Liverpool’s 100 per cent record in Europe’s elite competition.

Young centre-back Amara Nallo was involved in some late drama, picking up a straight red card on his debut for a last-man challenge, the correct decision according to ex-PGMOL chief Keith Hackett.

Cody Gakpo disappointed by Liverpool defeat but thankful to play at PSV once again

Gakpo is on course to enjoy his most prolific season in a Liverpool shirt, starting 22 of his 33 games across all competitions, scoring 15 goals, and providing five assists in his 1867 minutes of action.

The winger may be set to have a more pivotal role at the Merseyside club in the future, with Mohamed Salah linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.

Gakpo took to Instagram to share an emotional message regarding his return to PSV, saying: “It wasn't the result we had hoped for, but I'm grateful to have played again where it all began. It felt great to return and even better to see you, PSV'ers, again.”

Captain Virgil van Dijk, who had been left out of the squad, also had his say on the defeat to PSV, choosing to look on the bright side in his social media message.

Liverpool’s attention will return to the Premier League on Saturday (February 1) as they prepare for a trip to high-flying Bournemouth.
