Chelsea captain Reece James has sent an inspirational message to young footballers who are aspiring to following in his footsteps after the launch of his very own tournament.

The inagural Reece James Cup kickstarted on Saturday (18 January), with the tournament aiming to give young players the chance to showcase themselves against other top teams in the game.

James and various other Chelsea first-team players such as Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill were in attendance to watch as the young footballers attempted to showcase their skills.

The right-back understands the importance of academy football after climbing through the ranks at Chelsea, and he took to Instagram to express what the moment meant to him.

He said, "Today was the start of something that will continue for many years, as a young player coming through the ranks I played in many competitions similar to this and to have my own is really special.

"I hope year on year the tournament will expand and give many young players the chance to express themselves against top teams from across the borders. Really looking forward to seeing the finals tomorrow. Lastly thank you to everyone that played a part in making this possible."

Reece James is looking to get his Chelsea career back on track

James might be making a positive impact off the field, but after a torrid two years, he's now aiming to do the same on it.

The England international's progress has been hampered by consistent hamstring issues during the past two seasons which have restricted his game time.

James has only featured five times in the Premier League throughout this campaign, having missed 11 fixtures through injury.

However, the Chelsea captain reminded everyone what he's capable of on Tuesday (14 January) when he scored a late freekick to earn his team a point.

The 25-year-old is expected to be available to Enzo Maresca on Monday (20 January) when the Blues face Wolves in the Premier League.
