Chelsea are looking to get a deal over the line for Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel this month.

Chelsea and Bayern Munich are currently in talks over a deal that would effectively see Christopher Nkunku and Mathys Tel swap places.

Nkunku has struggled for game time at Chelsea and, with the January transfer window now open, he now has the opportunity to leave Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, Tel has made just 12 appearances across all competitions and is yet to play a full 90 minutes for Bayern in 2024/25.

Fabrizio Romano has now provided an update on Tel as of Wednesday night, with Bayern making another decision relating to the Frenchman.

Mathys Tel on Bayern Munich bench amid Chelsea talks

Romano has taken to X to say Chelsea are still in active talks with Bayern over Tel, although there’s “still no green light” or indeed any progress so far.

Bayern are in Bundesliga action against Hoffenheim on Wednesday night, and Tel is once again on the bench.

Tel has only started two league games for Bayern this season, and last time out – in the win over Borussia Monchengladbach – he didn’t get off the bench at all.

What Tel thinks about moving to Chelsea

TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey understands that Tel has some reservations about joining Chelsea this month.

Although the 19-year-old likes the idea of moving to London, Chelsea's squad situation is of some concern to him.

Tel would be willing to join Chelsea, but he would want some guarantees regarding his opportunities at Stamford Bridge.

Staying at Bayern is not really an option for Tel if he wants game time, however.

He has been told that he is not currently in Vincent Kompany's plans, and should Nkunku arrive, then he’d slip further down the pecking order.

What Tel could bring to Chelsea

Chelsea would be getting themselves one of the most exciting young players in world football should they sign Tel.

Back in 2022, The Guardian named Tel in their Next Generation list of their 60 best youngsters in world football.

Meanwhile, the official Bundesliga website likened him to Real Madrid and France superstar Kylian Mbappe.

They also deemed him an ‘accomplished forward with oodles of pace, dazzling ball skills and a knack for curling spectacular strikes with his cultured right boot’.

In addition , Football Talent Scout gave Tel a 10 out of 10 for potential in 2021, deeming him a "world-class" prospect.

They compared him to Thierry Henry and deemed him a "complete forward" as well as a "well-rounded player who has all the qualities to play on many other positions and attacking roles".
