The transfer window may now be shut, but clubs like Tottenham Hotspur will no doubt be working hard behind the scenes with regards to targets for next year.

Spurs enjoyed a fruitful summer on the transfer front, making a host of exciting young signings and also breaking their transfer record to sign a new striker.

There were targets who slipped through the radar and others who stayed put, including those whose contract are set to expire next year.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has provided an interesting update about an “extraordinary” player who was linked with Tottenham over the summer.

Kyle Walker-Peters contract talks break down amid Tottenham interest

The player in question is Kyle Walker-Peters, who has gone from strength to strength at Southampton after leaving Spurs back in 2020.

TBR Football revealed back in August that Tottenham retained an interest in Walker-Peters over the summer.

The 27-year-old’s current Saints contract runs until next summer, and talks have taken place over a new deal.

However, Romano has now reported that negotiations have broken down between Walker-Peters and his club.

Southampton had officially offered to extend his contract back in August, but at this stage, terms seem to be far away from being agreed, added the transfer insider.

Walker-Peters would be a proven bargain for Tottenham

Walker-Peters came through the ranks at Hotspur Way and made 48 appearances for Tottenham before leaving for Southampton in 2020.

He has made a real name for himself on the south coast, with 171 outings to his name. He has also won two caps for England.

Walker-Peters has been labelled 'extraordinary' by former Saints boss Ruben Selles, while Dele Alli once deemed him "fantastic".

Tottenham are currently fairly well-stocked at full-back. Destiny Udogie, Pedro Porro and Djed Spence are available, while Ben Davies and Archie Gray can cover. Sergio Reguilon also remains at the club.

However, Spurs may well look to strengthen further in January, so it makes sense to move for a Premier League-proven player who knows Tottenham well and could be available for a bargain price.
