Kevin De Bruyne would have to take a significant pay cut to remain in the Premier League amid speculation about a move to Chelsea, sources have told Football Insider.
De Bruyne, 33, has announced he will leave Man City at the end of his contract but has left the door open to remaining in England.
Joe Cole and William Gallas are among the pundits to call for Chelsea to bring the legendary midfielder back to Stamford Bridge on a free transfer.
However, sources say Premier League sides would find it very hard to match his current City salary and offers from Major League Soccer or the Saudi Pro League – meaning it would be a “surprise” to see him stay in England.
Premier League clubs will struggle to meet De Bruyne demands
The Belgium international has spoken out about City declining to offer him a renewal after 10 years of service.
He said: “I’m open for anything. I have to look at the whole picture. I’m looking at sporting, family, everything together, what makes the most sense for me and my family. I like to play football. I like to compete.

De Bruyne has made 34 appearances across all competitions this term, scoring five goals and notching eight assists.
His last chance at a trophy with City comes in the FA Cup, where Pep Guardiola’s side face Nottingham Forest in the semi-final on Sunday (27 April).
Maresca sack update from Chelsea
Meanwhile at Chelsea, Football Insider has revealed (21 April) that Enzo Maresca has the backing of the board despite unrest in the fanbase.
Sources say Chelsea's ambitious board see the ex-Leicester boss as the man to take the club forward despite patchy results in recent weeks.
Maresca left Leicester to join Chelsea last summer (2024) and signed a contract running until June 2029.
