Dundee defender Aaron Donnelly has been branded “pathetic” following his goal against Celtic by pundit Tam McManus on X.

The two sides played out a thrilling 3-3 draw on 14 January, and it was the first time that the Dark Blues had managed to take points off the Bhoys since a 0-0 draw in 2018.

A goal from Luke McCowan gave Celtic the lead after just five minutes, before Oluwaseun Adewumi levelled for Dundee.

Hyun-Jun Yang restored the Glasgow side’s lead, but once again Dundee were determined in their fightback and Celtic’s Cameron Carter-Vickers put the ball in his own net.

Dundee then went ahead for the first time in the match with Donnelly scoring. His celebration, or lack thereof, drew the ire of McManus, who said: “The lad Donnelly not celebrating because he is a Celtic fan? If so pretty pathetic IMO.”

However, despite his observation, another X user was quick to come to Donnelly’s defence, posting in response: “He says he was so surprised he didn’t know what to do,” to which McManus replied: “Fair enough,” with a Pinocchio-style emoji, clearly finding the fan’s explanation unsatisfactory.

Celtic then drew level, breaking the Dark Blues’ hearts with a 93rd minute leveller, as substitute Arne Engels scored from the penalty spot.

Celtic look vulnerable heading into season-defining matches

Football Insider Verdict

Brendan Rodgers will have been disappointed to have seen his side drop points against a team that, on-paper, they should be beating handily.

The reigning Scottish Premiership champions have now drawn with both Dundee FC and Dundee United since December, and they were also beaten by Old Firm rivals Rangers 3-0.

The Bhoys now have two matches ahead of them that could define whether the season is a success or a failure. They will play Kilmarnock in the FA Cup on Saturday (18 January) before hosting Young Boys in the Champions League on 22 January.

Given the adaptation to the Champions League’s group stage format, Celtic are in a good position to qualify for the first knockout stage, sitting 21st with nine points, one ahead of Premier League champions Manchester City.

Brendan Rodgers is in his second spell as Celtic manager

Rodgers will be hoping that the dropping points to Dundee will shock his team into action and realise that nothing is owed to the Hoops, the trophies they want to line their cabinets must be earnt.

The Celtic boss will be boosted by news that Luis Palma is due to become a Celtic player in the next few days, Keith Wyness has exclusively told Football Insider.

Another potential season-boosting transfer is being rumoured as Louie Barry could be set to join from Aston Villa this January.

In other news, Celtic may be set to sign a key midfielder from Burnley.
