Dwight McNeil has seemingly dropped a hint about the wait for his return to action as Everton prepare to face Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

David Moyes has been without his preferred playmaker since December, having undergone surgery on his knee in a bid to return to the form that saw him notch six goal contributions in 13 games prior.

Everton have also been without star winger Iliman Nidaye and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but injuries have not slowed the Toffees down, going unbeaten in nine league matches under Moyes.

Relegation no longer looks to be an issue at Goodison Park, now 17 points clear of the drop zone, and the team will be aiming to prove themselves against the current league leaders again on Wednesday, 2 April.

The last meeting was chaotic, with James Tarkowski netting a dramatic equaliser in the eighth minute of added time before Arne Slot, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Curtis Jones saw red after the final whistle.

And McNeil is clearly in no mood to miss another Merseyside derby.

Taking to his Instagram story [28 March], the 23-year-old shared an image of himself from the training ground, simply captioned with an hourglass, likely referring to his return from injury.

McNeil has missed 18 matches since getting injured during the 4-0 win over Wolves in December.

David Moyes can begin planning squad overhaul at Everton ahead of summer window

Football Insider verdict

Everton are being told to pull the plug on a new Calvert-Lewin deal, Doucoure’s one-year extension not being activated, and the likes of Orel Mangala, Jack Harrison and Armando Broja will all likely be returning to their parent clubs.

This could leave Moyes with a rather depleted squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, but with The Friedkin Group’s takeover now completed at Everton, there is optimism ahead of the transfer window.

The Toffees are still struggling for goals.

Supporters’ main concern heading into the new season will be finding a new striker because, even despite Beto‘s rapid rise in form, he is unlikely to spearhead the Toffees’ attack regularly.

Moyes has been rather cryptic himself about his future on Merseyside, suggesting he will not visit Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium before Premier League safety is secured, but it is safe to say that the planning can begin.

Transfer rumours have already begun to swirl, which will come as no surprise to the fans, but with new links coming from the new American owners, it could be a very exciting transfer window ahead.
