Effort to 'protect' player after Aston Villa exit – Manager keen to take things slowly

Douglas Luiz hasn’t started for Juventus yet since joining from Aston Villa in the summer.

He’s been on the bench so far and this has raised question marks and conspiracy theories about whether Juve signed him only to help Aston Villa financially.

It seems as if the lack of too much game time was because Juve boss Thiago Motta was just trying to slowly fit the Brazilian into his setup.

La Gazzetta dello Sport state today that being on the bench for three games wasn’t an 'early rejection' from Motta for the midfielder.

The Bianconeri boss knew that the Brazilian had arrived right after the Copa America and had cut short his holidays to train with the side. As a result, Motta didn’t want to rush Douglas Luiz into the team.

The club was only trying to 'protect' the midfielder, also because he had arrived for a significant fee. They didn’t want the Brazil international to feel the pressure right away, but that effort largely backfired.

There is now belief that the signing from Villa has earned the right to start the Serie A game against Empoli tomorrow. If he does not then the Italian tongues will continue wagging.
