'Embarrassing' Manchester United have hit 'rock bottom' under Erik ten Hag, says Liverpool hero

Manchester United have hit rock bottom after going backwards under Erik ten Hag, believes former Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp, who feels the Dutchman will soon be out of a job.

The Red Devils were hammered 3-0 at home by Tottenham on Sunday afternoon, with goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke.

Their efforts were not helped by a 42nd minute red card for captain Bruno Fernandes, but in truth they were extremely before and after the sending off.

Redknapp had a damning assessment of the performance and feels Ten Hag is running out of excuses for that kind of display after more than two seasons in charge.

‘If you’re under pressure as a manager, this is the place you want to come because you get all your confidence back,’ Redknapp told Sky Sports. ‘Tottenham today, it was so easy for them, they just looked so comfortable, so calm, they’re under no duress.

‘It feels to me now with United, I think that’s £616m he’s spent, Ten Hag, been here two years and they’re going backwards. He can’t complain anymore, he’s got his back four in place, all the players at his disposal, there’s no excuses.

‘They are rock bottom right now, I just don’t see where he can go from here, they are as bad as I’ve seen a United side. It’s actually embarrassing. A club of this stature shouldn’t be producing performances like that.’

After a Europa League draw with FC Twente in midweek, Christian Eriksen admitted that the Dutch side had more hunger than the Red Devils.

‘It’s disappointing,’ Eriksen said on Wednesday. ‘We wanted more in the end but it wasn't good enough. They looked like they wanted it more than us and that can't be right. That was said in the dressing room.’

Redknapp feels that was still the problem on Sunday and is a terrible state for the team to find themselves in.

‘Christian Eriksen said it after the game against FC Twente, they don’t want it enough, that can never happen,’ said the former England midfielder. ‘You can get beaten, a team can do you on a bit of skill or quality, but you cannot get outworked and that was the most damning thing for me in these last few games.’

The Red Devils have picked up seven points from six league games so far, scoring just five goals in the process.

Redknapp feels Ten Hag is at the end of the road at Old Trafford and has now had enough time to get things right, which he has failed to do.

‘I’ve been doing this job a long time and I’ve watched a lot of performances where managers subsequently lose their jobs and that’s the sort of performance and I’m seeing the sort of performances that gets managers sacked too often,’ he said. ‘I do feel slightly sorry for the manager, I do feel like he’s out of his depth, he looks a little bit lost.

‘I just don’t see how he can keep his job with these performances. I think he looks completely lost, I don’t know how he can turn it around.’
