talkSPORT’s Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy were left bewildered by a claim that England should have appointed a Championship manager.

Thomas Tuchel was officially announced as the new Three Lions boss on Wednesday after he signed an 18-month deal.

Tuchel is the permanent successor to Gareth Southgate and arrives with Champions League, Bundesliga and two Ligue 1 titles on his CV.

The former Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain boss is a significant appointment for England ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Despite Tuchel’s success across Europe, one fan called Wayne believes the Football Association should have gone for Mark Robins.

He currently manages Championship side Coventry City but Wayne’s suggestion had talkSPORT Drive’s co-hosts O’Hara and Cundy in shock, and you can read the full debate below…

Wayne: Can I give you who I think we should have gone for? Mark Robins, Coventry. I do believe that man is… My Dad’s a Cov supporter through and through, and I believe he’s…

O’Hara: Wayne, what are you going on about mate? You’re telling me you’d rather have Mark Robins, who’s in the Championship with Coventry and have been struggling all season, as the England manager over Thomas Tuchel?

Wayne: But look at him in big games… Thomas Tuchel…

O’Hara: What do you mean look at him in big games, what are you on about? He’s in the Championship!

Wayne: Thomas Tuchel’s just become the first German manager not to win the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich…

O’Hara: He came up against a Bayer Leverkusen team who went undefeated!

But O’Hara and Cundy could not believe what they were hearing

Wayne: He’s still the first manager that didn’t do it.

O’Hara: Does that make him a bad manager?

Wayne: No it doesn’t make him a bad manager, but what I’m saying is…

Cundy: Has everyone taken stupid pills? Have you… Has everyone taken stupid pills… What’s going?

O’Hara: Wayne, are you telling me, right, you want Jude Bellingham, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, to be managed by Mark Robins?

Wayne: I would, yeah…

O’Hara: What are you going on about… Wayne, come on mate, come on, please, please, come on.

Cundy: Wayne, Wayne…

Wayne: Look at what he’s done with the team’s he’s got, he got a team all the way up to the semi-finals of the FA Cup…

O’Hara: Oh my God, oh my God…

Wayne: He should have beat Man United…

O’Hara: Should have beaten Man United? And that’s the credentials to get the England manager’s job, because he should have beat Man United, but didn’t?

Wayne: No, what I’m saying is the man is… Over a season he’s not doing it but…

Cundy: Ok, let me ask you this Wayne, Wayne, Wayne, Wayne, Wayne. Wayne, you’re a Gooner right?

Wayne: Yeah.

Cundy: Do you want him managing Arsenal?

Wayne: I would have him, but not over [Mikel] Arteta…

Cundy: No, I didn’t say that, I didn’t say over Arteta. You would want Mark Robins as Arsenal manager?

Wayne: If we didn’t have Arteta, I would give him a go, yeah.

Cundy then joked if there was a full moon after questioning Wayne’s choice

Cundy: Would you be worried if he took over Spurs?

Wayne: Erm, no not really…

Cundy: No…

Wayne: Because it’s Spurs, because it’s Spurs. They haven’t got your Bellinghams and all them.

O’Hara: Honestly, I don’t know what I’m hearing tonight.

Cundy: What’s happened here? Is there a full moon tonight?

Lee Carsley will remain as England’s interim boss for their Nations League fixtures against Greece and the Republic of Ireland next month.

Tuchel, who is joined by Anthony Barry as his assistant, will then officially begin his role in January.
