Enzo Barrenechea’s loan move to Valencia felt like a work of fate when it happened. The 23-year-old’s family had moved to the Spanish city previously, unaware the midfielder would end up there on loan.

Barrenechea’s sister had enrolled on a university course in the city, so when Aston Villa signed the Argentine from Juventus and decided he was surplus to requirements for the current season, it’s was a stroke of luck that the chance of a move to Valencia came up.

Since the move, he’s had a mixed time. Valencia are 19th out of 20 in La Liga and very much in what is looking a difficult relegation battle.

He’s made 15 La Liga appearances, totalling around 1000 minutes. In November, the Aston Villa owned player was called up by Lionel Scaloni for Argentina but that felt more of a getting to know you exercise than a genuine call-up to the club’s national squad, especially given he wasn’t taken to the bench in either of the games during that break.

Carlos Corberán’s arrival from West Bromwich Albion has seen a change in fortunes for Barrenechea. He’s started three La Liga games in a row since, and completed the full 90 minutes, a run he hadn’t got close to until that point.

Spanish journalist Héctor Gómez, a Valencia specialist, has now reported the player wants to stay with Los Che for at least next season. He’s clearly settled, happy to be getting games, and fancies sticking around.

Estadio Deportivo carry report and it’s made clear this all depends on what Aston Villa think. Should Unai Emery be able to assure Barrenechea of regular playing time then the stance may change.

There’s no indication what type of move it would be in the summer, but it would be assumed another loan is the likeliest scenario.

In addition, there’s no caveat added to his decision regarding a possible relegation and what his view would be then, although the Valencia media may not want to think of that constantly.

Again, it’s made clear this all depends on Aston Villa’s approval.
