Brighton striker Evan Ferguson could be headed to a Premier League rival in a permanent £40million move, reports The Guardian.

The Seagulls striker has been linked with a number of sides in Europe looking for a forward this January, including Tottenham.

Premier League clubs Arsenal, and relegation-battlers Everton, have both been linked with the Irishman, but West Ham look to have taken the lead in the race to sign Ferguson.

The Hammers failed in a £57million bid for Jhon Duran earlier in the window, with the Colombian set to move to Al-Nassr, but the East London club may instead sign Ferguson.

Ferguson had been linked with a move to Germany to sign for Bayer Leverkusen, as a replacement for Victor Boniface, but the Nigerian’s move to Al-Nassr was called off last minute, causing the Bundesliga champions to cool their interest in the Irish striker.

West Ham had made loan offer with an obligation to buy of £21million for Augsburg striker, Ricardo Pepi, but the offer was rejected and there is doubt the Hammers will return with a second offer.

A loan with an option to buy Ferguson has been discussed between the clubs, however, an offer of £40million is now thought to be enough to see Brighton sell to their Premier League rival.

Brighton left with little time to replace their young star Evan Ferguson

Football Insider Verdict

Ferguson’s future at the Amex Stadium has proved to be a puzzling conundrum for the top brass at Brighton.

The striker broke out in the 2022/23 season, scoring 10 goals in 25 matches in all competitions for the Seagulls.

For the last 18 months, Ferguson has struggled with fitness issues, and has been unable to build on his impressive second season with the club.

The talent is clear to see, Ferguson uses his bulky frame well to hold off defenders, but the Irishman is also sharp and composed in front of goal.

The former Bohemian striker can offer a lot to Brighton, but only if he can maintain his fitness, and clearly that is an issue that the Seagulls are struggling to overlook.

Ferguson’s upside is a lot higher than that of a £40million striker, as seen by his links to Chelsea for £100million in 2024 [The Guardian], but there is also the risk that his value continues to diminish if Brighton do not sell now.

As for replacing Ferguson, if they do sell him this January, it is unlikely that Brighton will have the time to find a replacement, with the transfer window closing on the 3 February, the Seagulls will most likely have to wait till the summer to find a new striker.
