'Everton could make multi-million-pound payout to Burnley' - Keith Wyness

Everton may be under new ownership but their problematic past has cropped up again with Burnley taking recent legal action against the Merseysiders.
The Clarets were one of five clubs alongside Leeds United, Leicester City, Southampton and Nottingham Forest to apply for compensation after Everton were charged with a breach of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 campaigns.
Those charges eventually resulted in an eight-point deduction for the Toffees last season but they preserved their Premier League status – just as they did when Burnley went down in the 2021-22 campaign.
David Phillips KC, the chairman of the commission that handed out the first points deduction, revealed he was satisfied the applicant clubs have potential claims for compensation.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has suggested how much his old side could end up paying to Burnley.
Everton and Burnley could settle case out of court
The Lawyer reported on 12 March Everton have appointed Mark Howard KC to lead their case against Burnley this summer.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed Everton could pay out around £2-3million to the Turf Moor outfit.
The case is due to take place at the International Dispute Resolution Centre for Arbitration and Mediation in London.
Wyness suggested the dispute could actually be settled out of court.
He told Football Insider's Inside Track podcast: "This is a detailed and lengthy issue to get into.
"As usual, it opens up a legal can of worms – thanks to the Premier League's movements.
"Burnley is the only club, at the moment, to make a claim for compensation as they were relegated after Everton were docked points.
"The issue is that Everton were deducted points, but they admitted to overspending – and Burnley went down.
"Burnley have got to prove that the loss they had from going down, which is financial, was directly attributable to Everton's overspending.
Position | Team | Played | Points | GD |
16 | Everton | 38 | 39 | -23 |
17 | Leeds United | 38 | 38 | -37 |
18 (R) | Burnley | 38 | 35 | -19 |
19 (R) | Watford | 38 | 23 | -43 |
20 (R) | Norwich City | 38 | 22 | -61 |
"There's been a lot of talk about the Sheffield United v West Ham case, when Carlos Tevez was signed wrongly.
"Sheffield United were able to win that case, because they could prove that Tevez had caused them to lose points.
"In this case, we haven't got such a direct situation. I think it will be pretty hard for Burnley to prove Everton's strengthening of the squad is responsible for this.
"The scale we're talking about will be around £10-15million for the total claim. I think a percentage of that will be proven, the legal term is a denial of a chance.
"It could be 20% of a chance – £2-3million. I think it may be settled out of court and both clubs may do that. The new owners will be aware of this, and I'm not concerned about the outcome."
Everton ready to raid Rangers
Football Insider revealed on 14 March that Everton are plotting a move to sign Rangers star Hamza Igamane in the summer transfer window.
Everton attempted to sign the Moroccan during the January transfer window but were unable to get a deal over the line as Rangers were reluctant to sell.
The Toffees’ potential offer is likely to represent a significant profit on the £2.5million paid to sign Igamane in 2024.
