Everton have slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa in Wednesday night’s Premier League clash at Goodison Park.

David Moyes could not get his second spell in charge of Everton off to a winning start as just one goal separated the Toffees and Aston Villa.

Ollie Watkins latched on to a delivery from Morgan Rogers before slotting past Jordan Pickford in the 51st minute of the match.

Some of the officiating in the match came under criticism from some Everton fans, who felt they should have had at least one penalty.

Everton fans criticise rejected penalty calls against Aston Villa

In the 62nd minute of the game, Youri Tielemans appeared to drag Dominic Calvert-Lewin to the ground.

Rogers then appeared to push Lindstrom over as the Everton man looked to head the ball, but VAR did not intervene for either incident.

Everton fans fans were not impressed and made their feelings known.

“Feel like we’ve just been denied two penalties at once,” said one fan. “Either for Lindstrom or for the arm around DCL’s neck.

“I hope Moyes speaks loudly about these decisions. It’s absolutely absurd.”

Another supporter said: “How wasn't that a pen DCL and Lindstrom both been drag/pushed down.”

The criticism kept coming, with one fan writing: “Dom pulled down and Lindstrom pushed in the back but not enough for VAR, nice one lads.”

“How's that not a pen clear two hands in the back of Lindstrom that's a pen all day.”

Another said: “Blatant penalty, Lindstrom clearly got shoved out of the way of the ball.”

Another fan wrote: “2 blatant fouls, DCL pulled down by the neck and Lindstrom pushed when going for header in same corner. Both blatant.”

How Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jesper Lindstrom were rated for their displays against Villa

Calvert-Lewin struggled on the night, with Liverpool World giving him a 5 out of 10 for his efforts.

‘Had Everton's best two chances, one flashing just wide while he couldn't get a shot off with another but did stray offside too much in the first half,’ they wrote.

‘Little impact in the second period and had a penalty appeal turned down before being unable to hit the target with a late chance.’

Likewise, Lindstrom – who replaced Jack Harrison – received a 5 out of 10, with the outlet claiming he ‘didn’t do much of note’.

Harrison received the lowest rating of the night, getting a 4 out of 10.

‘So wasteful in the first half once almost punished by Rogers but did play a fine lofted ball for Calvert-Lewin just before the interval,’ they wrote. ‘Subbed in the 59th minute.’
