Everton's Begovic tells Liverpool fan 'don't get too greedy' after Newcastle loss

03/22/2025 04:19 PM
Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic could not resist when handed the opportunity to take a dig at a high-profile Liverpool fan in the wake of their Carabao Cup final loss to Newcastle.
Liverpool watched their treble hopes fall to pieces in the span of six days, as they were first knocked out of the Champions League by PSG, then lost to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup Final.
Despite topping the new league stage format of UEFA’s premier competition and winning the first leg in Paris, the Reds were unable to progress, losing on penalties.
The Carabao Cup final then saw Liverpool look sluggish and slow out of the blocks, as Liverpool transfer target Alexander Isak stole the show.
This season was seen as a real opportunity for the Reds to complete the unprecedented accomplishment, as Arsenal have faltered thanks to injuries to key players and Man City have completely capitulated.
Asmir Begovic shows no sympathy to Tony Cascarino
Begovic was asked what he thought of Eddie Howe and his achievements, having worked under him at Bournemouth, on talkSPORT.
The former Stoke keeper described him as “one of the most talented managers in the game” whilst stating he had cemented his “legendary status” at Newcastle.
Following his comments, Tony Cascarino chimed in with the cheeky question: "No sympathy for Liverpool then?"
Begovic laughed, before responding: "No, they're doing okay, can't have it all."
The Bosnian goalkeeper showed little sympathy for fans of his club’s rivals, with the Reds still in pole position to win the Premier League.
When Natalie Sawyer points out Cascarino is a Liverpool fan, Begovic uses the opportunity to take a light-hearted jab at the former Ireland striker, saying: "Don't get too greedy."
Liverpool must regain focus in Premier League run-in
Football Insider Verdict
With most of the current crop of players on international duty, Arne Slot will be using his time to focus on Liverpool’s title run.
It seemed a foregone conclusion previously the Reds would win only their second league title this century, but following their recent results, doubt is now seeping in.
The futures of Mohamed Salah, Bayern Munich target Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold have dominated headlines throughout the season and they finally seem to be taking their toll.
2024/25 Premier League table | Games played | Goal difference | Points |
1. Liverpool | 29 | +42 | 70 |
2. Arsenal | 29 | +29 | 58 |
Slot’s side maintain a healthy 12-point lead over a beleaguered Arsenal side, but as outlined by Football Insider, Liverpool face a dangerous run-in as they chase a first Premier League title since the 2019/20 season.
Following the culmination of the international break, the Dutch manager will stress the importance of not being complacent, with the title up for grabs, until mathematics say otherwise.
