Exclusive: Burton Albion agree deal to sign Lincoln star on loan

Lincoln City midfielder JJ McKiernan has agreed a deal to join Burton Albion on loan, sources have told Football Insider.
The Brewers targeted the signing of a new midfielder this month, having struggled in the middle since the departure of Joe Powell to Rotherham in the summer.
Meanwhile, the 22-year-old has been on the fringes of Michael Skubala’s Lincoln squad, and has played just 238 minutes of league football so far this season.
Of his 15 senior appearances across all competitions, McKiernan has started just four and has completed 90 minutes only once.
However, he is keen to play more regular first-team football and a move to bottom-placed League One side Burton is set to hand him his opportunity.
Lincoln, who sit 12 points above Burton in the table, have opened the door to McKiernan’s exit in the January window as they are keen for him to continue his development.

Burton have won just two of their 24 games so far this season and have been cut adrift at the bottom of the table, 11 points from safety.
They are hoping that a strong and productive January window will provide the necessary additions to Gary Bowyer’s squad to mount a shock comeback in the second half of the season.
Highly-rated McKiernan was targeted as a result of his availability on loan, despite having arrived at Lincoln from Morecambe just six months ago.
After one year with The Shrimps, the midfielder’s impressive League Two campaign in which he scored seven goals in 28 appearances earned him a step up upon the expiry of his contract.
His deal with Lincoln is set to run until 2028, and the club retain high hopes for his progress, but feel he will be best served playing regular football elsewhere.
After he failed to establish himself as a first-team regular in Skubala’s side, McKiernan is now set to join his third club in the last 18 months.
