Exclusive: Man City accelerate transfer plan after Ederson & Ortega exit update

22/04/2025 02:00
Ederson’s continued injury concerns have accelerated Man City’s plans to sign a new goalkeeper, sources have told Football Insider.
The 31-year-old is out with a hip problem but remains the number-one shot-stopper at City and is a key man for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Man City had planned to sign a new goalkeeper as part of their rebuild – either in the upcoming summer window or in 2026 – and are now seriously considering making the move sooner rather than later.
Stefan Ortega has proved a capable understudy for Ederson but could push for a move away this summer to play regular first-team football in the prime years of his career.
Man City set to sign new challenger with one goalkeeper to depart
It is believed Man City will be unwilling to lose both players this summer – leaving them in need of two top-class options.
However, one could be sold to make way for a new challenger between the sticks at the Etihad Stadium.
Ederson, who will have just 12 months to run on his contract in June, has played 33 times this term but just 22 of those outings have come in the Premier League.
x | Ederson | Stefan Ortega |

Football Insider revealed (20 April) that he is increasingly likely to quit Man City this summer amid interest in Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, Ortega is also under contract until June 2026 after signing an extension last summer (2024).
He faces a tough test on Sunday (27 April) with Ederson out – as Man City face Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup semi-final.
Man City identify ‘number one target’ to replace De Bruyne
Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (19 April) Florian Wirtz is now viewed as the "number-one target" to replace Kevin De Bruyne when the summer window opens.
City have identified four potential De Bruyne replacements including Phil Foden, Morgan Gibbs-White, Jamal Musiala and Wirtz.
Guardiola views Wirtz as the dream signing, but sources say Bayern Munich are the current front-runners and a deal could prove difficult for City to pull off.
