Exclusive: Middlesbrough close on deal to sign non-league sensation ahead of rivals

Middlesbrough are closing in on the signing of non-league sensation Brayden Johnson from Eastbourne Borough FC, sources have told Football Insider.
Johnson, 18, has been earning rave reviews this season for National League South side Eastbourne and scouts from EFL clubs have been making regular checks on the midfielder.
Middlesbrough are moving to steal a march on their rivals for Johnson by setting up a deal to bring the exciting teenager to the Riverside.

After making the step up from youth to senior level with Eastbourne Borough this season, Johnson has already become a regular for the club.
He has featured in 24 National League South games this season, scoring once and providing two assists in that time (Transfermarkt).
That has led to attention in the teenager from a number of Football League clubs, although it is Middlesbrough who look set to secure his services.
The Championship side have moved quickly in order to beat their rivals and complete a deal for Johnson.
Michael Carrick’s side are so far yet to make a signing in the summer transfer window. Football Insider understands they are in advanced talks to sign goalkeeper Mark Travers on loan from Bournemouth.
Following a 2-0 win over West Brom on Tuesday, Middlesbrough are currently fifth in the Championship table, ahead of a trip to Deepdale to face Preston North End on Saturday (25 January).
