Steven Gerrard returning as permanent Rangers manager is an exciting prospect as he knows exactly what is needed, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Scotland international and Rangers defender told Football Insider exclusively that Gerrard “knows how to get it done” at Ibrox, having won the league in his first stint in charge, but he still harboured doubts about his return.

The former Liverpool midfielder is out of work, having left Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq in January.

Gerrard was linked with a return to British football with Blackburn in February, but Rovers chose to appoint Valerien Ismael instead.

Steven Gerrard faces heavy competition for Rangers job

Whilst the club have spent several seasons struggling to keep pace with a relentless Celtic side, news of Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises’ prospective takeover makes the soon-to-be open position at Ibrox one of Europe’s most sought-after jobs.

Russell Martin has been linked with Rangers, and whilst his former side, Southampton, are proving to be one of the Premier League’s worst teams ever, the Englishman is still held in high regard.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho has also been linked with the job at Ibrox, and whilst the Portuguese manager has suffered a fall from grace in recent years, he is synonymous with both winning and drama, an exciting proposition for every football fan.

Whilst Gerrard was the last manager to win Rangers a Premiership title, the Englishman’s career post-Scotland has been fairly dismal, and there may be concerns about his ability to find a winning formula with a side that has struggled so much since his departure.

Alan Hutton says Steven Gerrard is an ‘exciting’ option for Rangers

Speaking to Football Insider exclusively, via NewBettingOffers.co.uk, Hutton was asked whether Gerrard would be a name that excites him, given the former Liverpool man’s links to the club.

Pausing for thought, the ex-Ger tentatively responded: "Yeah, yeah, I think it does.

I mean, does a manager coming back for the second time, does it always work?

"Possibly not, but I think he knows the club, what it’s all about, what the fans are like, the expectation, he knows everything.

"He’s won the league there, and that’s the be-all and end-all, so he knows how to get it done.

"I think some of the fans would be happy with that, but also they maybe want something new, something fresh, it’s going to be a big change in the club, I think over the next few years, and maybe somebody coming in with new ideas is something maybe we'd prefer."
