Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven could both be bound for the exit door at Tottenham this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Tottenham’s squad looks set for a significant overhaul in the transfer market, and could also be led by a new manager next season if Ange Postecoglou is given the boot despite their Europa League exploits.

Romero and Van de Ven quickly established themselves as Postecoglou’s first-choice centre-back pairing, but Spurs’ drop from fifth to 16th this season could see both defenders push for a move away.

The Argentine is under contract until 2027 at Tottenham and has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, while Van de Ven has also attracted admirers despite an injury-disrupted campaign.

However, sources have told Football Insider that Tottenham may “have to accept” Romero’s departure if a big enough offer comes in this summer, a sea-change from their no-sale attitude of 12 months ago.

Van de Ven’s contract in North London runs until 2029 and puts Tottenham in a better position to keep the Dutchman, and Football Insider sources have said Spurs want to build their defence around him.

Cristian Romero exit on the cards at Tottenham

Former Spurs and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has already told Football Insider this month that Tottenham will be happy to accept a big money offer for Romero, with both Madrid clubs keen on him.

Ex-Premier League scout Mick Brown also told Football Insider that Romero’s preference is a move to Real Madrid over their city rivals Atletico, and Tottenham’s preference is to lose him over Van de Ven.

Interest from the 15-time Champions League winners has also reared its head towards Van de Ven, and though Tottenham are consigned to losing one of their centre-back pair, they’d much rather keep him.

Next Tottenham manager to decide transfer policy

Tottenham’s outlook in the summer transfer window looks set to be one of huge changes, with Van de Ven or Romero’s exit likely to faciliate the arrival of at least one top-class replacement in central defence.

Although Daniel Levy will have the final say over who stays and who goes in North London, his chosen successor to Postecoglou will be crucial to shape the outlook Tottenham take in the transfer market.

The likes of Brentford’s Thomas Frank are near the top of the list when it comes to Spurs’ managerial targets, and it remains to be seen what the makeup of their squad will look like once August arrives.
