Walsall are leading Lincoln City in the race to sign Nottingham Forest attacker Joe Gardner on loan, sources have told Football Insider.

League Two leaders Walsall and League One side Lincoln are keen on landing the forward on loan for the rest of this season.

Gardner, 19, has caught the eye playing for Nottingham Forest's Under-21's so far in this campaign and he scored twice in their Premier League 2 clash with Chelsea last Friday.

The versatile forward, who has come through the ranks at Forest, made his first-team debut last season in the FA Cup against Bristol City and has been on the bench for several Premier League games.

He made the bench for the senior side on seven occasions in the 2023-24 campaign.

Gardner could now head out on loan to play regular first-team football for the first time in his young career.

The teenager has notched five goals and two assists in 13 appearances for Forest’s Under-21 side this term.

He has primarily lined up as a centre-forward during his youth development but can also feature as a winger on both flanks and an attacking midfielder.

First-place Walsall are 12 points clear of nearest challengers Crewe Alexandra and Port Vale in League Two with a game in hand on both sides.

Meanwhile, Lincoln are 12th in League One and are six points adrift of a play-off place with 20 games of this season to play.
