Liverpool are determined to agree terms over a new contract with Harvey Elliott and will begin talks in the coming weeks.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the Reds want to tie the 21-year-old down to a new long-term deal.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 23 January that talks over a new contract for Elliott in the coming weeks amid speculation over his future.

As things stand, Liverpool risk losing three of their best players with no financial return, and that is a situation they are keen to avoid in the future.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all out of contract at the end of the season, with little progress made towards new deals.

Elliott’s deal, meanwhile, is not set to expire until 2027 but the club want to ensure he remains on Merseyside long beyond the current expiry date.

The likes of Brighton and Borussia Dortmund keeping an eye on his situation, but Liverpool have no intention of allowing him to leave.

Liverpool prepare to hold Harvey Elliott contract talks

Speculation about Elliot’s future has been rife as a result of the midfielder having started just two games this season after his return from a foot injury.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, explained that his absence from the starting XI is more down to the available options than his own performances.

I hear they’re determined to agree a new deal,” he told Football Insider.

“Harvey Elliott has done better than I thought he would do, to tell you the truth.

“But he seems to be a good character around the club and he’s made real improvements to his game while he’s been at Liverpool.

“The only reason he’s not in the side is because they’ve got players like Mac Allister and Szoboszlai there.

“He’s been injured as well, don’t forget, so he’ll be given time to come back.

“So yes, Liverpool want to keep him at the club.

“They want to avoid a situation where he’s in the final year of his contract and could leave for free like we’ve seen with Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold.

“If that means tying him down to a long-term deal, I think they’ll start working on that soon.”
