Newcastle United will hold off on their move to sign Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo until the summer as a result of their financial situation.
This is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the Magpies do not believe they will be able to meet the forward’s asking price this month.
There had initially been hope that player sales would enable them to spend without adding to their concerns surrounding profit and sustainability rules.
However, there has been less outgoing activity than expected this month, and they will struggle to meet their lofty price tag without overspending their budget.
Newcastle will now wait until the summer before pursuing a move with the belief Brentford will be more willing to see the 25-year-old leave.
Brentford, meanwhile, are confident they still hold the cards over his future thanks to a one-year extension clause when his deal reaches its final year in the summer.
Newcastle plot end-of-season move to sign Bryan Mbeumo
Football Insider reported in October that Brentford are expected to demand a fee in excess of £60million for their star forward amid interest from Newcastle and Arsenal.
Now, Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, explained that
“It all depends on the financial situation at Newcastle,” he told Football Insider.
“I think they were hoping they could sell some players this month which would have given them a bit more room with profit and sustainability.
“That hasn’t happened yet, so it looks more likely they’ll have to wait until the summer.
“I can see him being a good fit for Newcastle because he’s got the kind of work ethic Eddie Howe likes.
“When you look at the different options, I can see him doing well in that Newcastle side.
“Brentford don’t want to let him go for cheap, especially in the middle of the season, because they’d be losing a major part of their team.
“So yes, Newcastle are interested, but I don’t think that’s a deal that will happen this month so they’ll be putting plans in place for the end of the season if they can do a deal then.”
In other news, Newcastle plan to accept breath-taking Lloyd Kelly offer.
