Expert predicts Daniel Farke sacking amid 'nailed-on' Leeds verdict

03/24/2025 07:34 AM
Leeds United will sack Daniel Farke if they fail to achieve promotion from the Championship for a second consecutive season.
That is according to former Man United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the manager is under increasing pressure to deliver results.
Failure to win promotion to the Premier League, given the players available and the money invested at Elland Road, would be seen as a “disaster” by the board.
Farke had come under pressure following last season’s playoff final defeat to Southampton, but the Leeds players remained behind the boss and he was handed a second chance.
However, the expectation of the board this season is that he leads them to promotion this time around, and failure to do so would see him dismissed.
League Position | Club | Matches Played | Wins | Draws | Losses | Points |
1 | Leeds United | 38 | 23 | 11 | 4 | 80 |
2 | Sheffield United | 38 | 25 | 7 | 6 | 80 |
3 | Burnley | 38 | 21 | 15 | 2 | 78 |
4 | Sunderland | 38 | 19 | 12 | 7 | 69 |
Daniel Farke under pressure to deliver promotion at Leeds United
As things stand, Leeds are leading the Championship and are level on points with second-placed Sheffield United but just two above third-placed Burnley after just one win in their last four games.
Brown, who has worked closely with under-pressure managers in his career and achieved promotion from the second tier with both Sunderland and Aston Villa, has insisted that continuing in this vein of form could see Farke dismissed.
“Leeds, on paper, are by far the best team in the Championship,” he told Football Insider.
“But that doesn’t mean they’re nailed-on to get promoted.
“Results have been a bit inconsistent lately and you never know which Leeds are going to turn up.
“It’s been a good season so far, but they’re looking to end the season strongly because their aim is to get promoted to the Premier League.
“They missed out last season, and everybody knows about their history in the playoffs.
“If they don’t get promoted, the owners are not going to be happy.
“It would be a disaster by all accounts because of the money they’ve spent and the squad the manager has available to him.
“Ultimately, the manager’s aim is to get them promoted, and if he can’t deliver that then he will be sacked.
“He wants to put together a strong end to the season to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
Kalvin Phillips return on the cards after Man City decision
Leeds’ plans for the summer transfer window will also hinge on whether they can achieve promotion to the Premier League as they plot an ambitious move for Kalvin Phillips.
Football Insider revealed on 17 March that Phillips is pushing for a return to Leeds as he no longer has a future at Man City under Pep Guardiola.
Since leaving Leeds to join Man City in 2022, the 29-year-old has made just six starts under Guardiola and has spent two mixed loan spells at West Ham and Ipswich.
City are willing to take a substantial loss on the £45million fee paid to Leeds in 2022 to get him off the books this summer and clear space for new additions to their squad.
