Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has been the subject of transfer-related speculation in recent days.

Reports from Argentina, such as from El Economista, claimed that the Spurs ace’s contract boasts a €65million (£54.5million) release clause.

Romero has been linked with Real Madrid in recent months, and a release clause in his contract would severely weaken Tottenham’s chances of keeping him.

However, Fabrizio Romano has sought to reassure Spurs fans, taking to X on Wednesday afternoon with an update about the former Atalanta man’s contract.

Fabrizio Romano says Cristian Romero’s Tottenham contract has no €65m release clause

Romano has, quite simply, rubbished the rumours claiming Romero has a £54.5million release clause, saying it’s not true.

The transfer insider also stressed that Tottenham considered him untouchable last summer, despite interest from top clubs.

Romero has some work to do

While it’s reassuring to see Romano pour cold water on rumours regarding a release clause in Romero’s contract, there’s no doubt that the World Cup winner has some work to do.

His form has been inconsistent this season, struggling against Jamie Vardy at Leicester City and doing badly against Brighton & Hove Albion last time out.

Admittedly, Tottenham's swashbuckling style makes it more difficult for their defensive players to perform because there is so much open space at the back.

In this instance, individual errors make things so much worse, and Romero is much better than that. After all, he’s won pretty much everything there is to win with Argentina.

Nevertheless, it’s good to hear that Romero isn’t quite so easy for rival clubs to try and sign. Once his form picks up, he’ll be instrumental to Tottenham’s hopes of success.
