Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is only contracted to the Premier League champions until the end of the season.

The Spaniard has been a revelation for the Citizens, leading them to an era of unprecedented glory at the Etihad Stadium.

However, Guardiola has remained coy over the prospect of a new contract at Manchester City beyond the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Ben Jacobs has now shared an update on the 53-year-old’s situation at the Etihad – and it’s pretty positive for the most part.

Manchester City confident of Pep Guardiola renewal as manager ‘fully on board’ with Hugo Viana appointment

Jacobs, writing on GiveMeSport, says Man City are ‘optimistic’ that Guardiola will extend for another season.

Indeed, the Citizens are reportedly targeting an agreement by the end of November, likely to be a one-year extension, and are working hard on the contract front.

In addition, any consequences from the 115 charges Man City are facing for alleged breaches of financial rules are not likely to influence Guardiola’s decision.

Guardiola is apparently not contemplating the ‘worst-case scenario’ of Man City potentially being relegated or even expelled from English football.

According to Jacobs, The Man City boss has received ‘private assurances’that the club are confident in their ‘not guilty’ position.

Any extension would almost certainly allow him a break clause should the reigning champions fall out of the Premier League, added the journalist.

Guardiola is also said to be unconcerned by the departure of sporting director Txiki Begiristain at the end of the season.

He knew Begiristain was leaving as early as last year, and is also fully on board with his replacement, Hugo Viana, added Jacobs.

Was Guardiola in the England picture?

According to Jacobs, the Football Association did consider Guardiola for the England job, but he was never granted a formal interview.

This is because the FA did not get a clear indication Pep wished to leave club football and knew he would prove the most expensive of all potential candidates.
