Gabby Agbonlahor reacts as Daniel Farke sack vindication emerges at Leeds United

23/04/2025 13:23
Gabby Agbonlahor reacted on social media to reports that Leeds could sack Daniel Farke even after getting them promoted to the Premier League.
The Whites narrowly missed out on an immediate return to the top-flight of English football last season, losing to Southampton in the play-off final.
Farke, who twice achieved promotion as Norwich City boss, made no mistake this time round, as Burnley’s 2-1 win over Sheffield United confirmed Leeds’ spot in the Premier League for next season.
However, whilst the German has proven himself a bona-fide promotion expert, his track record in England’s top tier is poor, to say the least.
Having been relegated in his first stint in the Premier League in the 2019/20 season, the former Borussia Monchengladbach boss was sacked midway through the 2021/22 season, with Norwich once again finishing bottom of the table.
With that in mind, ex-Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor had suggested Leeds could consider parting ways with Farke, in spite of the success of this season.
Leeds considering finding Daniel Farke replacement
Now, as reported by MailSport the following day (23 April), Leeds are indeed considering sacking the manager who has restored their status as a Premier League club.
The report states the Whites’ bosses harbour reservations that Farke is the man to ensure their future in what is viewed as vital top-flight survival.
Whilst no decision has been reached yet, other candidates are being examined ahead of a pivotal season for the club.
Agbonlahor took the opportunity to reply to the report on X in the wake of his previous claims live on talkSPORT, jokingly saying: “What do I know!”
Daniel Farke potential firing would be harsh but not without its justifications
Football Insider Verdict
From the outside looking in, seeing any club considering parting ways with a manager after achieving success is hard to comprehend.
However, given the fact that remaining in the Premier League is as difficult as it has ever been, Leeds might be the first of many to consider using different types of managers to achieve different kinds of success.
Burnley, who are also on their way back to the big time, have Scott Parker at the helm, and much like Farke, the Englishman has failed in the Premier League despite achieving promotion with both Fulham and Bournemouth.
2024/25 Championship table | Games played | Won | Drawn | Lost | Goal difference | Points |
1. Leeds | 44 | 27 | 13 | 4 | +60 | 94 |
2. Burnley | 44 | 26 | 16 | 2 | +46 | 94 |
3. Sheffield United | 44 | 27 | 7 | 10 | +25 | 86 |
Both managers thrive when their teams are the biggest fish in the pond, but amongst the powerhouses of England’s top-flight, the style of football employed by Farke in particular does not translate well.
As Agbonlahor pointed out on talkSPORT when first raising the issue, the decision would be a ruthless one, but there is no room for sentimentality when the difference between being a Premier League and Championship club is in the hundreds of millions.
