'Geovany Quenda's Ruben Amorim snub explained as Chelsea beat Man United to deal'

Chelsea beat Man United to the signing of Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP for due to a specific preference for the player it has emerged.
Earlier this season it was reported that Man United were keen to sign Quenda, as they looked to undertake a significant overhaul of their playing squad.
A move to Old Trafford would have seen Quenda reunite with Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim, who gave the 17-year-old his senior debut with Sporting.
However, it came out ahead of the international break that Man United will miss out on the signing of the teenager, who is instead set to join one of their Premier League rivals in the form of Chelsea.
Geovany Quenda Chelsea choice explained
Given his previous connections with Amorim, it will have been seen as a surprise to some that Quenda elected not to join his former manager at Man United.
It appears though, that the teenager’s decision to join Chelsea instead was for football-related reasons above anything else.
As per The i, Quenda elected to make the move to Stamdford Bridge over Old Trafford, as he would prefer to play as a winger rather than a wing-back, with Amad currently an obvious example of how a forward player can be repurposed under Amorim.

Appearances | 44 |
Goals | 2 |
Assists | 8 |
Yellow Cards | 4 |
Red Cards | 0 |
Minutes Played | 3,215 |
With Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca using a 4-2-3-1 system, he will have more of a chance to do that than he would in the 3-4-2-1 formation employed by Amorim at Man United.
There is still some time before that move is completed, with Quenda set to remain at Sporting for next season, before officially joining the Blues in 2026.
Man United to be frustrated over transfer miss
Football Insider Verdict
The fact that they have missed out on the signing of Quenda is unlikely to go down all that well around Old Trafford.
With the teenager already having an established relationship with Amorim, they will have felt confident about their chances of bringing him to Man United.
This will therefore go down as a missed opportunity for them to bring in the sort of young player with top-flight experience they seem to be searching for at the minute.
With Quenda heading for a rival in the form of Chelsea, missing out on this deal could also cost them on the pitch when they face the Blues in the future.
It also puts pressure on Man United to go out and fill that role with another new target who may need to be identified first.
This could also be something of a gamble for Quenda, given Maresca is already under pressure from Chelsea fans over a number of issues.
With the teenager not set to move to Stamford Bridge for another 15 months, Maresca may not be there by the time he arrives.
If that is the case, his replacement may favour a different formation, that could deny Quenda the chance to play in the winger role as he wants to do.
