All eyes will be on Manchester United to see if they take a step towards rescuing their season by beating Real Sociedad in the second leg of the Europa League’s Round of 16.

Ruben Amorim would have been frustrated after United were held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg and Thursday’s contest has become a de-facto final for his side.

With Manchester United hosting Real Sociedad at Old Trafford, the pressure will be on them to capitalise on their home advantage and win the game.

Ruben Amorim’s calibre is being questioned and if the Red Devils are knocked out of the Europa League by Sociedad, several United fans might also start to doubt whether he is the man for the job.

However, the Portuguese tactician is an experienced manager in cup competitions, having lifted the Taca da Liga three times in his career.

But even for Ruben Amorim, the challenge of ousting Real Sociedad might be a difficult job as Manchester United are in dire straits.

Paul Merson predicts Manchester United to beat Real Sociedad

Sociedad are having a disappointing season themselves, dropping down from finishing sixth last season in La Liga to 11th this campaign but things are even worse at United as they are 14th in the Premier League.

While in the 2023/2024 season, the English giants were placed eighth in what was the lowest point they have ever hit in the Premier League era.

But despite Manchester United’s struggles, Paul Merson backs them to defeat Real Sociedad.

Merson said: “Tottenham and Man United, two massive games, seasons on the line, I think both just go through, I think both just go through, I think, you know both will, I think both with advantage, their seasons are on the line, pressure will be on them.”

“But I am just going to go for Man United and Tottenham to just get through to the quarter-finals.”

However, Paul Merson doubts United win the Europa League this season.

Manchester United vs Real Sociedad head-to-head record

Over the years, Manchester United and Real Sociedad have locked horns seven times, both in the Europa League and the Champions League.

The first time both sides met each old in 2013, the hosts won 1-0 at Old Trafford. But in the seven meetings in total between Manchester United and Real Sociedad, the Premier League giants have won three, drawn three and lost once.

But in the eighth match-up between both sides, Paul Merson expects Manchester United to reign supreme against Real Sociedad and perhaps rightly so due to the Old Trafford factor being in their favour.
