West Ham are considering a shock move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford after hiring Graham Potter as their new manager.

Potter, 49, was unveiled as the new West Ham boss on Thursday morning following Julen Lopetegui’s sacking on Wednesday.

Potter, who previously manged Premier League clubs Chelsea and Brighton, has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at the London Stadium.

He takes over a West Ham team sitting 14th in the Premier League with just six league wins so far this season.

Potter will try to bring in some of his own signings during the January transfer window and is already reportedly interested in signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from his former club Chelsea.

According to talkSPORT, West Ham are also looking into a possible deal for Manchester United forward Rashford, who admitted last month he was ‘ready for a new challenge’.

United boss Ruben Amorim is believed to be happy to sanction Rashford’s departure, with the England international attracting interest from several foreign clubs.

Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain are among the interested parties but West Ham could pull of a sensational swoop as they consider making a loan offer.

Manchester United sold Aaron Wan-Bissaka to West Ham last summer and are willing to discuss a deal with the Hammers, though a move abroad remains the most likely outcome.

Rashford has made more than 400 appearances for United and scored 30 goals in Erik ten Hag’s first season at Old Trafford.

But his contributions have dried up since the 2022-23 campaign and the 27-year-old believes a January move could be in the best interest of all parties.

After agreeing to become West Ham’s new manager, Potter said: ‘It’s a proud day to be head coach of this amazing club, big tradition, big history, big expectations, big challenge.

‘I’m really excited, it’s a bit like Christmas – Christmas for the adults. I’m looking forward to meeting the players today, meeting our supporters and getting going.

‘It’s been 20 months of a good rest, a good break and you can imagine in that time you speak to lots of people. Lots of conversations with different owners and different directors.

‘But it was important that I chose the right option for me at the right time and as soon as I spoke to this club, it just felt right for me.

‘It’s an amazing club with a tremendous, loyal fanbase that is passionate, knowledgeable, knows their football and what they want. I think it’s a good fit.

‘My experience is that if you can build a team that is recognisable on the pitch, that the supporters identify with, are proud of and enjoy watching and you get that trust and connection between the players and the supporters, with everybody aligned, that’s the key.’

Potter’s first game in charge of West Ham will be against Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Friday night.
