Sheffield United and Swansea City will both be fined for the brawl that ensued after the challenge that led to Harry Darling sent off in the match between the two, Keith Hackett has said.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that confrontation could have been avoided if referee Dean Whitestone had immediately shown a card to the Swans defender.

Luke Williams’ side already look set to be punished following incidents in the wake of their derby defeat to Cardiff City on Saturday (18 January).

Now it seems as though both they and Sheffield United are set to hit with a financial blow after what happened between the pair on Tuesday night (21 January).

Five minutes into the second half and with the score locked at 1-1, Darling was sent off for the Swans following a challenge on Rhian Brewster.

The Sheffield United man had seemingly been left in considerable pain by that challenge, prompting an angry reaction from several of his teammates.

A number of Swansea players responded to that, leading to a heated scuffle between both sets of players on the pitch.

It was only as those clashes developed that referee Dean Whitestone actually produced the red card and showed it to Darling.

Hackett believes that both Sheffield United and Swansea will be fined for that incident, which he says could have been avoided had Whitestone immediately sent the defender off.

When asked by Football Insider if the two clubs could face punishment over that brawl, the former referee said:

“The referee was close to hand and if his immediate decision is a red card he shows it immediately. This would have stopped the confrontation between both sets of players.

“Both teams will be charged for failing to control their players. This will result in fines being issued.”

Sheffield United the went on to win the game 2-1 thanks to a Harrison Burrows penalty, moving them top of the Championship table.

Swansea meanwhile are now winless in their last five games in all competitions, leaving the Welsh side 15th in the second-tier standings.

In other news, Sheffield United are in advanced talks to sign a Leicester City player.
