Despite how busy Chelsea were this summer, Enzo Maresca seemingly still has ambitious plans to improve his squad in the near future.

Chelsea have started the season relatively well under Maresca, even if they were frustrated against Nottingham Forest just before the international break.

Such is the level of competition at Stamford Bridge right now, several Chelsea players are playing for their futures, even though things are looking positive.

Maresca has plans to win trophies with Chelsea and will seemingly do everything in his power to make sure he has the right squad to do so.

That being said, Chelsea are interested in a shock return for Marc Guehi in 2025 – perhaps intending to play him alongside Levi Colwill long-term.

Joe Cole can’t believe how far Marc Guehi has come amid Chelsea return talk

Guehi is now thriving for both Crystal Palace and England, taking his chance superbly under Gareth Southgate at the Euros.

Chelsea already have a congested centre-back department right now, but Guehi would still be an immediate starter, as he would for almost all Premier League sides.

That being said, when speaking during TNT Sports' coverage of Palace's defeat to Liverpool on Saturday, Cole spoke glowingly about Guehi, someone he would surely enjoy seeing at Chelsea once again.

Cole said: "He is so assured, he is so calm. If you look at him, he is never ruffled. I think he is at a stage where he has cut out a lot of his mistakes already, so he is getting better and better.

"He is a leader. He is the captain of the side. He is a top, top player. I think he is England's, if not number one, number two centre-half. John Stones and Marc Guehi now have solidified that. I think he is top, top-drawer."

Chelsea could also turn to Barcelona to improve their defence

Of course, if Guehi proves too difficult to sign in the coming months or year, Chelsea are also looking further afield to improve their options at the back.

Chelsea are also interested in Barcelona's Jules Kounde, who also enjoyed some stellar moments for France at the Euros.

Given the level of the likes of Guehi and Kounde it's clear that Chelsea's ambition has no limit as they try to return the club to their glory days.

Perhaps some fans at the Bridge would like the focus to be slightly more on the current crop of players, but similarly there will be very few complaints should some like Guehi return.

That being said, perhaps an upgrade for Robert Sanchez should be sought first and foremost.
