'He won't fit the squad' – Arsenal told to avoid Real Madrid star after transfer approach

Former England striker Darren Bent has urged Arsenal to drop their interest in Arda Guler, insisting the youngster is no improvement on their current options in midfield.
Guler swapped Fenerbahce for Real Madrid in July 2023 and has gone on to establish himself as one of the most promising young midfielders in European football.
However, Guler has failed to nail down a regular starting spot with Madrid, making just three starts under Carlo Ancelotti this season, and it’s believed the 19-year-old is growing frustrated with his peripheral role at the Bernabeu.
According to Spanish publication Sport, Arsenal have made contact with Guler’s camp to gauge whether or not the Turkey international would be interested in a move to the Emirates.
Guler’s current situation has been likened to that of Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, who left Madrid for the Gunners in search of guaranteed playing time three years ago.
While recognising Guler’s undoubted potential, though, Bent – a lifelong supporter of Arsenal – believes Mikel Arteta already has strength in depth in the teenager’s position.
‘Not for me. You want a grade out of five? I'll say one,’ the ex-England, Tottenham and Charlton forward said on talkSPORT’s Insider Gooners podcast.
‘He won't fit the squad. I think he's a very good player, I saw him at the Euros, very talented. But will you swap one bench for another?
‘At Real Madrid he's not getting the opportunities. Coming to Arsenal there are better options, be it out wide or in the No.10 role.
‘I can't see that one happening. Good player, but, not for Arsenal, no.’
Guler’s current contract, which he signed upon arrival in the Spanish capital, runs through to the summer of 2029.
Facing the media earlier this month, Ancelotti said his ‘priority’ was turning Madrid’s poor form around when asked about Endrick and Guler’s lack of first-team minutes.
‘Endrick is ready to play, doing very well and has bene showing a lot of quality in training,’ the Madrid head coach told reporters.
‘I say the same about Guler. They are young people who are pushing.
‘But the collective idea is to turn things around as quickly as possible. Can you do that with them? Yes.
‘But the objective is to turn it around, that is the priority. Not to give minutes to one player or another.’
Would Guler be a good signing for Arsenal?
- Yes
- No
