Liverpool face the prospect of losing some of their most important players next summer.

Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are both out of contract come the end of the season, while Trent Alexander-Arnold would also be free to leave in the summer.

Real Madrid have been strongly linked with a move for Alexadner-Arnold, but speaking on The Lineup, Emmanuel Petit has claimed that a move to Madrid wouldn't be good for the right-back.

Trent Alexander-Arnold warned over Real Madrid move

Petit shared his verdict on the 'magnificent' defender potentially moving to the Bernabeu.

"Honestly I'm not sure that could be something good for him if he (Alexander-Arnold) leaves to Real Madrid. In history how many English players have left England and played abroad? Not many. You know why, because this is the best league in the world, you have already everything you need in England," Petit said.

Petit's point isn't right

Emmanuel Petit says that English players shouldn't leave the Premier League, but that seems to be a very outdated view these days.

Of course, whether or not Alexander-Arnold should join Real Madrid is another debate entirely, but the idea of English players not thriving abroad is archaic to say the least.

Jude Bellingham has just won the Champions League with Real Madrid, Jamie Gittens just scored a brace in the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening, while Harry Kane is breaking all sorts of records with Bayern Munich.

Now, more than ever before, a move abroad for English players makes the world of sense.

Of course, every player is different, and Alexander-Arnold may be best off staying at Liverpool, but to say that English players should simply stay in the Premier League is quite a narrow-minded point of view in 2024.

Regardless of what Petit says, Alexander-Arnold has a big decision to make heading into next summer.
