How Newcastle Carabao Cup win could end up firing Crystal Palace or Brentford into Europe this season

Newcastle defeated Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday to win the Carabao Cup – and that victory could lead to unprecedented scenes in the Premier League.

The Magpies have landed a place in the UEFA Conference League next season as a result of the Carabao Cup win, although Eddie Howe currently has Newcastle sitting sixth in the Premier League and on track to qualify for a stronger European competition.

Should Newcastle end up qualifying for the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League via the Premier League, they obviously will no longer have a need for that UEFA Conference League spot – so let’s take a look at how it could trickle down as far as 11th place this season.

How 11th place in the Premier League could receive European football

A lot more needs to happen between now and the end of the season, but Newcastle winning the Carabao Cup is the first block on the road to as many as 11 English sides competing in Europe next season.

For 11th place to get a UEFA Conference League spot, the following needs to happen.

• Liverpool, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Manchester City all qualify for the UEFA Champions League by finishing in the top four of the Premier League
• Newcastle secure UEFA Champions League qualification by finishing fifth (UEFA could grant England an additional slot due to how well English sides have done in Europe this season, with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea all still involved in UEFA competitions)
• Brighton finish sixth and earn a place in the UEFA Europa League
• Chelsea finish eighth but qualify for the UEFA Europa League by winning the UEFA Conference League
• Aston Villa end up ninth but qualify for the UEFA Champions League by winning the competition this season
• Manchester United or Tottenham finish tenth but qualify for the UEFA Champions League by winning the UEFA Europa League

As things stand, Brentford – who could lose Christian Norgaard – would be the beneficiaries of such a scenario, with the Bees currently sitting 11th in the Premier League.

However, Crystal Palace – who may also lose Marc Guehi – are just two points behind in 12th with a game in hand, so the Eagles could finish the campaign in that position.
