Ange Postecoglou saw his Tottenham team lose their fourth game on the bounce this weekend and Chris Sutton has been discussing his impact.

Postecoglou had initially got Tottenham in the title picture at the start of the season but they have since dipped away and now look on course to finish fifth behind Aston Villa.

The former Celtic manager has brought his expansive and exciting style of football to the club but in recent weeks, Tottenham have struggled in terms of results and performances.

Recent interviews have seen Postecoglou come across as being a bit down about things and he recently made a comment on whether or not he was the right man for the job, while Jamie Carragher suggested the Spurs boss needed to change or face the sack.

However, speaking about Postecoglou and jumping to his defence, Chris Sutton has suggested that Spurs will be more than happy with the job he’s done.

Chris Sutton defends Ange Postecoglou’s first season at Tottenham

Speaking on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast, Sutton defended the Spurs manager for his recent comments.

“I don’t think it was a tactic. It was a bit of sarcasm, a throwaway comment and it’s hooked you,” Sutton said.

“I always felt there were going to be bumps in the road, I think that’s natural. I think in many respects they over-achieved at the start of the season under him. And then as is the norm, everyone jumped on the bandwagon and got carried away and they’ve had a poor spell of late. I think you have to judge him fairly over the course of the season.

“We know which brand of football he wants to play. He came in and we’ve spoken about this, Tottenham played a negative style of football and he’s changed it. With that comes its risks. It’s what Tottenham fans wanted and I think he’s given them that but there is a downside to that style and they have been exposed ruthlessly as we’ve seen. But overall, I think Tottenham fans will be happy with what they’ve seen.”

Tottenham have to stick with Postecoglou and ride it out

Ultimately, Postecoglou has come into a club at Tottenham that were flat out after being run into the ground by Antonio Conte last season.

And in fairness to him, he has delivered really in terms of new managers at big clubs.

Postecoglou has outperformed – in terms of league position – both Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp’s first seasons at Liverpool and Arsenal and when you look over at Manchester United, their struggles are massively apparent as well.

All in all, then, a fifth placed finish is not to be sniffed at for Tottenham and while they’d have loved that Champions League spot, they’ll still have Europa League football and be a year further down the line in their development.
